ARTIST’S TALK with ANGELO VERMEULEN
Followed by an open debate
“What Can We Learn From Nature?

initiated by Green Days
Brussel, De Nieuwe Opdrachtgevers, 16 mei 2011

De Nieuwe Opdrachtgevers and the Brussels non-profit organization AAA (participant of the Green Days project) invite Angelo Vermeulen to present his work and practice. Angelo Vermeulen is a visual artist, filmmaker, biologist and author. His research in ecology, environmental pollution and teratology informs his art, which includes bio installations, experimental setups incorporating living organisms and science fiction references. His projects include ‘Blue Shift’, ‘Biomodd’, ‘Corrupted C#n#m#’ and a collaboration with the MELiSSA life support division of the European Space Agency.

De Nieuwe Opdrachtgevers and the community of Willebroek (Belgium) have chosen Angelo Vermeulen to create an artwork for a specific public space in Willebroek. The result will be a sculptural bio-diversity tour: a combination of green architecture, art, recycling and ecology and will be delivered later this year.

“What Can We Learn From Nature?”may be a superfluous question after having experienced Angelo Vermeulen’s artistic work, but it is the question that opened up the first meeting of Green Days in Bologna (IT) on January 2011. A number of artists and curators have responded so far. You can read their contributions online on:http://greendaysproject.tumblr.com/archive

Green Days is a multidisciplinary project based on the relationship between urban environment and nature, and on the possibility to "imitate nature” through biomimicry applied to the visual and performing arts in public space. The project involves four European non-profit organisations devoted to contemporary art: neoncampobase (Bologna), AAA - Audiovisual Artists Anonymous (Brussels), Eastside Projects (Birmingham), Fabrica de Pensule (Cluj-Napoca) and is supported by the European Cultural Foundation (ECF). During spring/summer, each partner will invite artists to reflect on the role of nature and green areas in the urban texture, to hold a workshop on site, walking throughout the city in order to carry out a social and urban survey, asking the public to participate actively to the process.

The Brussels partner AAA – Audiovisual Artists Anonymous organizes a second meeting of Green Days (a project week) from 14 to 18 May 2011 in Brussels (BE).

The artist talk with Angelo Vermeulen is part of the Brussels Green Days program, is co-organised by De Nieuwe Opdrachtgevers and is open to public.
